Our excellent U16 boys pulled out a performance of real heart to beat Old Christians 36-31 at the UCC farm this Sunday.
The boys took a 17-10 lead into half time after playing with the wind in the first half. Two well finished Riain Walsh tries and an Ivor O’Riordan try giving them something to work with facing a stiff breeze. Jamie Edwards with a conversion on a tricky day for a kicker.
An early second half try by Will Brugger put Kinsale further ahead. But then two quick Old Christian’s tries put the game in the balance. A third Christian’s try pulled the scores level with only 10 mins to go and it was time for the boys to show their stuff. Could they absorb the setbacks and battle into a stiff breeze to win it?
It’s a continual credit to this U16s team that they never give up. They went through the phases into the last few minutes, never panicking. Suddenly they were applying line pressure and they even felt they’d gotten over when Aiden DuPlessis Geiger got under the posts, but the referee deemed it to be held up.
They remained composed. Went through the phases again and Riain Walsh was the hero stretching to score with the final play of the game.
And that was it. The boys had saved the best til last and WON THE SOUTH MUNSTER LEAGUE!
Well done lads!!!
