Munster Club U18 Cup - Group 2 ...  Round 3 @ Young Munster on 27 January 2019

Kinsale u18.5s travelled to Limerick to face Young Munster in the 3rd round of the Munster Cup today. Kinsale went into this with one win and one draw to their name while Young Munster had just a draw from their opening two games.

The game was not held at their main grounds but a few miles down the road in their backup pitches. Kinsale kicked off the game and immediately put the home team under pressure. Within 2 minutes Kinsale were awarded a penalty and Calum Fennel split the posts to put the visitors 3-0 up, the perfect start for them. From the restart Kinsale put the home side on the back foot again and were awarded a second kickable penalty. This time however, Kinsale decided to go for the corner which didn’t end up with points. Young Munster then began to power their way into the game and spent the next 15 minutes in the Kinsale half. Their efforts were rewarded when the crossed the line into their right corner to take the lead of the game 5-3. The conversion attempt was missed. From the restart Young Munster put Kinsale on back foot again. At this stage there was strong tackles going in from both sides. 5 minutes later and Young Munster were reduced to 14 with a player seeing yellow for leading with the shoulder. This game Kinsale the chance to take advantage and it was boosted even more when Young Munster were reduced to 13 after a second player saw yellow for not rolling away despite warnings. Kinsale started to stretch the home team with a passing game and worked their way forward. However, Kinsale failed to take advantage and the home side were finally back to 15. Kinsale were awarded a penalty and they went for the corner and from the resulting lineout they mauled across the line to go 8-5 up with captain Richie Callanan putting the ball down. Fennel’s conversion was followed by the half time whistle. 5-10 to the away team.

Young Munster regrouped and tried to put Kinsale under pressure from the restart but it was Kinsale on the ascendancy. At this stage the weather started to turn for the worse as the rain began to fall. 4 minutes later Darragh Mangan touched down to extend the lead to 5-15 for the visitors after some good phases of play. Fennel converted once again to make it 3 from 3 on the day and gave Kinsale an 17-3 lead. Kinsale continued to keep Young Munster well inside their own half and tried to put the game to bed but the home side continued to tackle hard and keep Kinsale out. 10 minutes later Kinsale were once again awarded a kickable penalty and Fennel made it 4 from 4 to make it 20-5. The remaining 20 minutes of the game were played in the home sides half but there were no more scores added to the board despite the visitors creating multiple chances. The referee finally blew up with the visitors going home with the 4 points and remain undefeated in this stage of the Munster Cup.

Post-match a happy Denis “Puppet” Collins stated “We controlled the game very well. The set pieces went well, the defense was solid and the kick chase was excellent. We look forward to the challenge of Newcastlewest at home next week.” Denis also went on to say “The players and management once again would like to thank the great support we received at the game again today. It is fantastic to see it and it really spurs on the team.”
