Kinsale : 18 Vs Old Christians : 12
Munster Club U18 Cup - Group 2 ...  Round 1 @ Snugmore on Saturday 5 January 2019

Today Kinsale RFC u18.5s kicked off 2019 with their first game of the Munster U18 Cup having qualified for it from their league before Christmas. This phase see the Sharks play 2 home games against Old Christians and Newcastlewest, while they have 3 away games versus Waterpark, Young Munster and Nenagh so home points were going to be vital for any progression.

I was a cold chilly day in Kinsale as both teams took to the pitch. From the off Kinsale put pressure Old Christians. Kinsale's line-out was strong from the off winning their own while also robbing some of their oppositions throws. Old Christians on the other hand were physically strong and put a lot of pressure on the scrums. The first 15 minutes were mainly spent in the visitor’s half and a clearance from the visitors gave Kinsale a line-out inside their own half. From that Kinsale formed a maul and drove Old Christians back 20 to 30 yards. After another couple of phases Kinsale were awarded a penalty and kicked to the corner from which another maul was formed and they crossed the line with Dan Graham touching down to give the home side the first score of the game after 18 minutes. Calum Fennel stepped up and converted. Old Christians tried to fight back but the home team had a spring in their step and pushed forward again and 8 minutes later Ciaran Stokes crossed the line in the corner after some nice offloads in the build-up with Jordan right having the final pass. Fennel was unsuccessful with his 2nd kick to make it 12-0. That was the score at halftime.

Old Christians reviewed their tactical plan at half time and make some tweaks to their game in an attempt to get back into the game. The next score was going to be vital. These changes were rewarded within 5 minutes of the second half as Old Christians worked through a number of phases of play before working it out to their right to cross the line to make it 12-5. The visitors failed to add to the score line with their conversion attempt. It was now the home side that needed to re-group as Old Christians tails were up and wanted to reduce the score line. Kinsale held strong and tried to get back to playing their own game and began to drive Old Christians back. 13 minutes in and Kinsale were rewarded a penalty in front of the posts which Calum Fennel kicked to make it 15-5 to the home side. Another 13 minutes later and the score was reduced as Old Christians crossed the line again and this time their conversion attempt was successful to reduce the difference to a penalty kick at 15-12. 8 minutes left with both sides now giving their all. The next scoring chance fell to Kinsale when a penalty was awarded from a very successful restart to the game. Fennel kicked over to extend the lead to 18-12. Old Christians now knew they needed a try and conversion with minutes left on the clock and put the Kinsale defense under pressure. However, the home side managed to hold on and kicked the ball out of play once the time was up to give them the perfect start of this Phase of the Munster Cup. A great game all round with the home side finally winning 18-12.

Post-match Denis "Puppet" Collins stated "Good Performance against a strong physical team. Line-out went well as did the maul. Thought we were clinical in first half. Second half our breakdown was targeted so this effected continuity. We need to be more effective there but I am very pleased with defensive effort and work rate. A positive start to campaign and looking forward to challenges ahead. A tough trip away to Waterpark next Saturday"

Other results today were Newcastlewest 18-12 Waterpark
