Kinsale RFC 1st XV got off to a great start in their first competitive game of the season against Mitchelstown RFC in the O’Neill Cup at Snugmore last Friday.
Fergus Gimblett opened the scoring for Kinsale after 5mins with a try in the corner, which was converted by Barry McGory.
Mitchelstown responded well from the restart. Following a series of penalties from the home side, Mitchelstown went to the corner and scored a converted try from a maul.
On the 25minute, McGory added a further 3 points from a penalty on the Mitchelstown 22m.
Again Mitchelstown reacted well from the restart, they turnover the ball at the breakdown and moved the ball wide to Tom O'Callaghan, Mitchelstown’s No 10, who powered over the line for 5 points. The conversion attempt was missed.
In the closing moments of the 1st half there was some great inter play by Kinsale resulting in Evan Palmer putting Gimblett away in the corner for his 2nd try of the night. The conversion attempt was missed.
Half- time score: Kinsale 15 Mitchelstown 12
On the 46 minute McGory added an extra 3 points to make it 18-12 to Kinsale.
Three minutes later McGory completed the scoring on the evening with a well taken drop goal.
The game finished 21 – 12 to Kinsale.
Kinsale now advance to the Semi Final of the O’Neill Cup v Crosshaven – Date TBC.
