Posted by Kinsale RFC on 26 April 2008
Kinsale met Sundays Well today in the final of the Munster Junior 3 Cup. This game was destined to be tough as Sundays Well are an experienced side with great skill. A strong drive from Well in the early minutes tested Kinsales defence. With a counter attack Kinsale winger Dave O’Mahony scored a try as a result of a 45 metre run but the touchline conversion was missed. Well rallied and applied more pressure but Kinsales defence was immaculate and they cleared the lines with a penalty turn-over for holding on. Well retaliated with a try from 25metres but the conversion was missed. Well responded again from the re-start and forced their way down the pitch where they won a penalty which was kicked to corner and a try scored from the resulting Maul, again the conversion was missed. For the rest of the half both teams battled but held each other off with fantastic defence from both sides. Shortly before half time the injured Ian Coughlan was replaced by Aidan Mc Claverty. Kinsale immediately applied pressure from the restart but missed a penalty early on. Well responded proudly and a great tackle from Dave O’Mahony kept them at bay a while longer. Well were determined and scored a converted try after 55mins from 15meters out. Kinsale counter attacked and temporarily releaved pressure but Well ran in another converted try. Shortly before the last Well score Kinsale made a few substitutions which rallied the team and a try was scored by Connie O Reagan and converted by James Lynch. Great performances from Connie O’Regan, Greville Walsh, Fintan Lawton and an exceptional display of rugby from Conor Cullen tested Well and kept the pressure on. Unfortunately Well proved the better team on the day and finished the game 24-12 up.
